Sustainability across UHL
Our sustainability strategy supports both local sustainability objectives and national NHS environmental priorities, including the NHS goal to reach Net Zero Carbon emissions.
We’re embedding sustainability into every part of our work:
- energy-efficient buildings – improving hospital infrastructure
- sustainable procurement – choosing eco-conscious suppliers
- greener clinical care – reducing waste and using low-impact practices
- low-carbon travel – promoting bus use, cycling, walking, and electric vehicles (EV) use
- community engagement – working with local people to create change
Why sustainability matters in healthcare
Our Green Plan helps us:
- cut carbon emissions and meet NHS Net Zero targets
- improve air quality and reduce healthcare waste
- enhance service efficiency and resilience
- support long-term improvements in patient care
This isn’t just about meeting national requirements; it’s about doing the right thing for our community and future generations.
