Haematology is the study of blood and blood disorders. These vary from anaemia to diseases such as leukaemia. While many of our patients are undergoing investigations and treatments for blood-related cancers, we also care for a significant number of patients who have non-malignant disorders.
The Clinical Haematology Service has over 170 members caring for patients in a variety of settings, including even in their own home.
The Clinical Haematology Service is made up of:
Haematology inpatient beds
The main inpatient ward is Ward 41, on the second floor of the Osborne building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. We also care for patients on other wards in the Osborne building as well as the assessment unit (Oncology and Haematology Assessment Unit, OHAU) in Balmoral building.
Osborne Treatment Centre (OTC)
This is on the second floor of the Osborne building and is where oncology and haematology patients have planned day case procedures, including chemotherapy, blood transfusions and bone marrow biopsy procedures. This team also deliver our OTC@Home service.
Haematology outpatient department
Most haematology outpatient clinics are held in the outpatient department on the ground floor of the Osborne Building.
Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU)
This is a five-bedded in-patient ward caring for patients before, during and after bone marrow transplantation or other cellular therapies, such as CAR-T. It is on level two of the Windsor Building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Day case patients are seen and assessed in the Hambleton Suite, adjacent to the BMTU.
Haemophilia centre
Based on level 2 of the Osborne building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the service specialises in the care of patients with bleeding and clotting disorders haemostasis and thrombosis (H&T). It also supports care of those living with TTP (Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura). All H&T clinics are held here with the support of the wider multidisciplinary team, including physiotherapy and psychology.
Anticoagulation service
Our anticoagulation service provides a highly specialist service to some local patients. Also offers an in-reach service for inpatients within UHL. They are based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, but support inpatient wards across our three main acute hospitals.
Haemoglobinopathy service
Treating patients with sickle cell disease and thalassaemia. Based in the Osborne Building (ground floor), Leicester Royal Infirmary.
We are a specialist centre, providing specialist care to patients in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland, and Northamptonshire.
