The Prevention Report, which was published on Wednesday 26 February 2025, is UHL’s commitment to prioritising proactive care to reduce the risk of illness, injury, or disease before they happen or get worse.
UHL marked the launch of the 2025 report at the first of a series of community health events at the African Caribbean Centre in Leicester, where members of the public could take up free liver screening, head and neck cancer checks, learn the basics of CPR, and gather health advice from more than 20 stalls.
Ruw Abeyratne, Director of Health Equality and Inclusion at UHL, said: “I am delighted to share our latest Prevention Report showcasing the progress we have made and our priorities for the year ahead. Being able to launch this report at a community event is the perfect way to demonstrate how prevention works in practice, shifting care from our hospitals into community spaces.
“We have made significant strides in prevention since our first report was published in 2024. Undertaking this work as an integrated, acute provider is vital to improving health outcomes, addressing inequalities and achieving the bigger NHS shift from sickness to prevention.
“At UHL, we are proud of the collaborative efforts we have made with local partners to deliver prevention at every level of care for the diverse communities we serve across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.”
The report highlights the significant strides made over the last year as well as looking to the year ahead.
The key priorities highlighted in the report include:
- Strengthening ‘Making Every Contact Count’ (MECC) at every patient contact point
- Expanding smoking cessation services
- Improving alcohol and obesity management pathways to provide earlier interventions
- Enhancing tuberculosis (TB) and bloodborne virus screening to tackle rising cases
- Improving colleague wellbeing and expanding mental health support
