Our burns and plastic surgery team provide specialist care for the management of adults and children with burn injuries, hand trauma, post-operative wound care for skin grafts, flaps, trauma injuries, and complex lower leg wounds.
The team is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary which has 24-hour access to the Emergency Department and a dedicated Burns and Plastics Treatment Centre (BPTC) for adults and Children’s Day Care Unit (CDCU) for children.
Our Burns and Plastics Treatment Centre (BPTC) is open Monday to Friday and runs on an appointment basis. We also have an outreach Service ran by our specialist nurses, for patients who are unable to come into hospital.
Burns
We are part of the ‘Midlands Burns Operational Delivery Network’ (MBODN). The specialist burns care within the Midlands is provided according to the severity of the burns injury. This is a systematic referral pathway with:
- Birmingham being the adult and paediatric burns centre,
- Nottingham being the adults and paediatric burns unit
- In Leicester we provide a facility level service, which cares for adults and children with smaller, non-complex burns.
All these hospitals work together in collaboration to provide the right care at the right time, in the right location.
The main aim of this network of hospitals is to make sure that our burns services are capable of meeting all the physical, psychological and social needs of our patients. Leicester burns injury patients that require a higher level of care at Birmingham and/or Nottingham due to the severity of the burn injury will return back the services in Leicester for ongoing wound care and rehab once the acute care phase is completed.
Our specialist burns service in Leicester has a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to burn care. We have a dedicated Burns theatre list once a week.
If it is felt relevant to your care you may also be seen for specialist scar management, medical tattooing, a skin camouflage consultation or signposted for additional help from burn related charities over the course of your recovery.

Breast reconstruction
Our plastic surgery staff have considerable experience in breast reconstruction following breast cancer treatment. The team is able to offer a comprehensive service to patients who have had, or are due to have, excision of a breast cancer or removal of the whole breast. We regularly perform any one of a range of options for recreating the breast mound and nipple.
This may require simply inserting a breast implant, or alternatively moving muscle and skin around from the back. The best results, however, can often be achieved using skin and fat from the tummy and moving it to the chest, shaped as a new breast.
This is long and complex surgery involving microscopic techniques. Each patient is therefore individually assessed, and all options considered at consultation, to plan for the most appropriate, tailor-made procedure and result.
Micropigmentation (medical tattooing)
Micropigmentation is a service provided here in the burns and plastics department. Micropigmentation uses small sterile needles to insert pigment into the skin to create the illusion of a body part (nipple-areola complex, eyebrow or lip boarder) similar to a tattoo. This would be created over a few appointments to make sure the colour matches you as closely as possible.
If you are on the waiting list for this service – you will receive an appointment, and a leaflet with more information. Any questions you may have will be answered at your first appointment.
Prosthetics
We have a small team of maxillofacial prosthetics and reconstructive scientists who work alongside our burns and plastics colleagues. We rehabilitate patients who require our help by making burn splints or wound splints for different parts of their body. Splints are typically made of a semi-soft plastic which is contoured to the shape of your body and will apply gentle pressure to minimise scarring or protect wounds while they heal.
