Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) refers to a group of chronic conditions that cause inflammation of the digestive tract. The two main types are:
- Ulcerative colitis – affects only the colon (large intestine)
- Crohn’s disease – can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, but most commonly impacts the end of the small intestine, the colon, or both
Our primary goal is to help you manage your condition effectively, keeping symptoms under control and maintaining your quality of life. While flare-ups (relapses) are sometimes unavoidable, our team is your first point of contact to help manage and treat them promptly.
Our IBD service
Our IBD care is delivered by a dedicated team of gastroenterology consultants and IBD nurse specialists who provide both in-person and telephone clinics. These services support:
- Urgent care during flare-ups
- Ongoing condition monitoring
- Personalised treatment plans
We also offer a nurse-led advice line for patients seeking support with flare-ups, medication concerns, or test results. Details are provided on the next page.
Nurse-led service
Our dedicated IBD nurse-led service provides expert care and support for patients living with Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Our team of specialist nurses offers personalised, evidence-based care, working closely with you to manage flares, develop treatment plans, and advise on medication and prescriptions.
We offer both face-to-face and telephone clinics, ensuring flexible access to care whether you’re experiencing symptoms or attending a routine review.
Patient-initiated contact service
In addition to our telephone advice line, we now offer a patient-initiated contact service in partnership with Accurx – an easy and convenient way to reach our nursing team for advice and support.
You’ll receive a secure, reusable link via text message, which allows you to contact the IBD nurses directly at any time during service hours.
- You can contact the service between 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, for support with the following:
Flare symptoms
- Medication queries, including biologics
- Prescription requests (please allow 7 working days)
Please note: Appointment or test queries should be directed to your consultant’s secretary or clinic coordinator via the switchboard: 0300 303 1573.
Using the contact service
When accessing the link, you’ll be guided through a few short questions to help us triage your query. If you’re reporting flare symptoms, a more detailed questionnaire will follow to help us gather the necessary clinical information quickly and efficiently.
- Urgent medical queries: Calls will be returned the same day
- Routine queries: Responses within 3 working days
- Administrative queries: Handled by our admin team
Our nurses may consult with your IBD consultant before providing a final plan, ensuring your care is safe, accurate, and tailored to your current condition.
Telephone advice line
If you don’t have access to a smartphone, you can still use our IBD Advice Line: 0116 258 4352. It is available from 9:30am on weekdays (excluding bank holidays)
Note: The advice line is open until the clinic slots are filled for the day. Once full, it will reopen at 9:30am the next working day.
