Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common condition where the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems. Around one in 4 people have high blood pressure, which can shorten life expectancy. People with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke (which damages the brain) or a heart attack. If left untreated for a long time, high blood pressure can also lead to kidney failure and even damage your sight. It can also cause the heart to become abnormally large and less efficient (left ventricular hypertrophy), leading to heart failure and further increasing the risk of a heart attack.
Conditions of high blood pressure (NHS website)Hypertension services at UHL have developed an award-winning service that has been nationally recognised as a leader in the field of hypertension (high blood pressure). Following investigations, all issues are discussed with the patients, who then receive a treatment plan and a copy letter for their doctor (GP).
