Our Digestive Diseases Centre is one of the UK’s largest and most advanced clinical and research centres for gastroenterology. Our expert team includes 12 consultant gastroenterologists, supported by a dedicated team of multi-disciplinary professionals.
We offer comprehensive care for patients with conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, colon, and liver. Our specialist clinics cover a wide range of digestive disorders, including:
- Gastro-oesophageal diseases
- Functional bowel disorders
- Nutritional disorders
- Inflammatory bowel disease (including colitis)
- Rectal bleeding
- Liver disease (hepatology)
- Cancer surveillance, including Barrett’s oesophagus
We perform more than 6,000 endoscopic procedures each year across our hospital and community sites. Each site is equipped with the latest technology for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including:
- Gastroscopy – to examine the stomach and upper digestive tract
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy – to view the lower bowel
- Colonoscopy – to examine the entire colon
Leicester also hosts one of the largest national surveillance programmes for Barrett’s oesophagus, a condition linked to oesophageal cancer.
