Each year, around 1,000 patients are admitted to our specialist, purpose-built Infectious Diseases Unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary. This 18-bed facility serves as a regional centre of excellence for the management of complex infections, including:
- Tuberculosis, including multi-drug resistant forms
- Advanced and complex HIV
- Infections acquired overseas, such as malaria and typhoid
- Community-acquired infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals
Patients are admitted via outpatient clinics, referrals from primary care and regional hospitals, or through the Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit.
Our outpatient services provide care and management for:
- Tuberculosis
- Adult HIV
- Hepatitis B and C (as the lead centre for the Leicester Hep C Delivery Network)
- OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy) for complex oral and intravenous antibiotic treatments
- A broad range of other infectious diseases
We are also proud to contribute to national and international research in infectious diseases. Key research leads include Professor Manish Pareek and Professor Martin Wiselka, working on innovative studies that advance treatment and global understanding of infection.
