Patient-Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) is a way of managing your follow-up care that puts you in control. PIFU means that instead of having regular routine check-up appointments, you contact us to arrange a follow-up when you feel you need it – for example, if your symptoms change, you have a flare-up, or you are worried about your condition. This means you only have appointments when necessary, while still having quick access to care when you need it.
How does it work?
- You and your clinician will agree if PIFU is right for you
- Together, you will agree on what changes or symptoms mean you should book a follow-up
- You will be given details of how to contact us directly to arrange an appointment
- Your PIFU pathway will last for an agreed time (sometimes indefinite)
- Appointments can be arranged as a phone call, video call, or face-to-face visit
Why choose PIFU?
PIFU gives you the flexibility to manage your condition by arranging follow-up appointments as and when you need them. It gives you the convenience of avoiding unnecessary hospital visits, while still receiving the same standard of care.
Which conditions use PIFU?
If you have a long or short-term condition in a range of specialities, including dermatology, rheumatology, and cancer, then PIFU could be right for you. More information on PIFU can be found on the NHS England website.
