We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff by ensuring the right staff, with the right skills, are in the right place at the right time (National Quality Board, 2016).
In line with national requirements set out by NHS England following the Francis Report (2013), all NHS organisations must publish monthly nurse staffing data on NHS Choices, making this information publicly accessible. The Safer Staffing Data Report includes:
- Planned vs. actual staffing hours, broken down by staff groups (e.g. non-registered midwives/nurses, non-registered nursing associates, registered nursing associates, and registered midwives/nurses)
- Care Hours Per Patient Day (CHPPD) – For more information, visit NHS England – CHPPD
Each ward also displays posters showing the planned and actual staffing levels, updated at the start of every shift.
To ensure ongoing assurance around safe staffing for nursing and midwifery, the Trust employs a range of measures, including the use of evidence-based tools to assess workforce needs in inpatient settings. These assessments are informed by patient safety outcomes, patient feedback, and professional judgement (NHS Improvement, 2018).
