Aatika Kanyat is a Cultural Link Worker for the Tuberculosis (TB) Service at the University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust (UHL), where she plays an important role in helping patients from diverse backgrounds navigate the complexities of their treatment.
Fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati and Punjabi, Aatika bridges communication gaps, provides cultural insights, and builds trust with patients who may not fully understand their condition or treatment.
Her work is crucial in ensuring that language and cultural barriers do not prevent patients from receiving the care and support they need.
Having experienced TB herself as a teenager, Aatika is motivated by her personal experience which has become a driving force in her role with UHL, allowing her to empathise with the patients she helps every day.
She said: “When I was diagnosed with TB, it was a difficult and isolating time” Many people don’t believe they have TB because they only associate the symptoms with having a cough, but TB can involve more than just that.”
Aatika’s role is to help educate and support patients, ensuring they understand that TB can manifest through a range of symptoms beyond just a cough.
She added: It’s crucial they understand that if they experience other symptoms like unexplained weight loss, fever, night sweats, or persistent fatigue, it’s important to see a doctor.”
Through her work, Aatika builds trust, which is vital in removing the stigma often associated with TB. Many patients, especially those from ethnic minorities, can feel ashamed or fearful of seeking treatment.
“I help people understand their condition, making sure they feel supported, so they don’t feel ashamed or afraid to seek care,” she added. This approach helps break down barriers and ensures that patients are not deterred from pursuing the treatment they need.
In addition to translation, Aatika’s work involves educating patients about the importance of following their treatment plan. By offering culturally sensitive care and guidance, she ensures that patients are well-informed, confident in their treatment, and empowered throughout their journey.
Aatika’s role is a key part of UHL’s commitment to delivering high-quality care for all communities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
