A consultant surgeon who was recognised by patients for his compassionate care is encouraging members of the public to nominate colleagues for this year’s University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) Recognition Awards.
Mr Graham Offer, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, was the winner of the Patient Choice Award at last year’s awards after being nominated by a patient for the care and support he provided during their treatment.
Graham joined UHL in 2005 and has dedicated much of his career to reconstructive surgery, particularly breast reconstruction for women recovering from cancer. Throughout that time, he has focused on providing care that not only treats the physical effects of illness but also supports patients through some of the most challenging periods of their lives.
His nomination recognised the compassionate approach he takes with patients, including ensuring they feel comfortable, listened to and involved in decisions about their care. The nomination recognised his support patients and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on winning the award, Graham said: “It meant the world to win the award last year. It’s important to work with patients as individuals, and to be able to help somebody through a really difficult time in their life – the patient is always the most important person.
“I don’t do this work for recognition but knowing that a patient took the time to nominate me was incredibly humbling. It meant a great deal because it came from someone whose care journey I had been privileged to be part of.”
The Patient Choice Award is one of the categories in the UHL Recognition Awards that allows patients, families and members of the public to recognise a colleague who has made a difference to their care or experience.
Graham is encouraging patients and families to consider nominating a member of staff who has gone above and beyond for them: “If someone has made a difference to you or your family, I would encourage you to nominate them. It means more than people realise and is a wonderful way to recognise the dedication and compassion shown by NHS staff.”
The UHL Recognition Awards celebrate the achievements of colleagues and volunteers across the Trust, recognising those who go the extra mile to support patients, families and each other.
Nominations for this year’s awards are now open, giving patients and members of the public the opportunity to thank colleagues who have made a positive difference to their care. You can submit a nomination here.
