In partnership with the Anne Robson Trust, we are proud to introduce VALE – Volunteers at Life’s End. This role is part of our commitment to ensuring that no one faces death alone.
What is a VALE?
VALE volunteers provide companionship and emotional support to patients in their final days or hours, helping to bring comfort, dignity, and human connection at a deeply important time. Whether it’s sitting quietly, holding a hand, reading aloud, or playing a favourite piece of music, these simple acts of kindness can mean the world.
The role of a VALE
As a VALE, the most valuable gift you offer is your time. You may:
- Sit with a patient, offering quiet presence or conversation
- Read to them or play calming music
- Support loved ones who are distressed
- Provide respite to family members who need a short break
- Liaise with nursing staff as an advocate for the patient
- Reassure staff and families that patients are not alone
This role requires warmth, empathy, and confident communication. If you feel called to offer meaningful support at life’s end, this may be an incredibly rewarding experience.
Training and Support
You will be welcomed as a valued member of our volunteer team. All VALE volunteers receive:
- Full training, including a Trust induction and e-learning
- Specialist end-of-life care training, delivered in partnership with the Anne Robson Trust
- Ongoing support from a dedicated VALE coordinator
- Regular wellbeing check-ins to support emotional resilience
We understand that this role can be emotionally challenging, and we are committed to supporting you throughout your journey.
