Understanding your condition
It’s okay to ask questions. Asking questions, sharing how you feel, and following the advice of your doctors, nurses, and healthcare team can help you prepare to go home sooner. To support you, here are some helpful questions you might want to ask during your stay. If you’re unsure about anything, please ask a doctor during ward rounds or speak to a nurse on your ward:
- What is wrong with me? For example, you might be treated for a chest infection.
- What will happen next? For example, you may need some blood tests.
- What do I need to do to get ready to go home? For example, getting dressed in your own clothes or walking more.
- When am I likely to be discharged? For example, we are aiming for Wednesday morning.
Remember, understanding your care helps you play an active part in your recovery. Don’t hesitate to ask – our team is here to help.
Eating and drinking
Good nutrition and hydration are essential for your recovery. As soon as your healthcare team advises it’s safe, try to eat and drink regularly to help your body heal.
- Whenever possible, sit in a chair to eat your meals – it can aid digestion and help you feel more comfortable.
- Drink plenty of fluids unless your doctor has given you specific instructions otherwise.
- Try to eat at regular intervals throughout the day to maintain your energy levels.
- If you need assistance with eating or drinking, please don’t hesitate to ask our staff -they’re here to support you.
We cater for a wide range of needs and individual tastes and aim to deliver high quality food and food services to patients.
If you have special dietary needs or concerns, our dietitians may be able to recommend the best food and drink options tailored to your individual requirements.
Staying active during your hospital stay
It can be tempting to stay in bed while you’re in hospital, but too much time lying down can quickly lead to weaker muscles and slower recovery. The more you keep moving, the easier it will be to return to your usual routines.
- Let staff know how you normally manage daily activities, such as walking, dressing, and using the toilet, including any walking aids you use at home.
- If it’s safe, try to walk to the toilet rather than using a commode or bedpan — this keeps you active and can help prevent future continence issues. If you need help, our staff are always happy to support you.
- Wear well-fitted shoes or slippers with good grip to reduce your risk of falling.
- Bring in your day clothes. Wearing your own clothes, rather than staying in a hospital gown, can help you feel more like yourself, maintain dignity, and even support a quicker recovery.
- If you’ve been given exercises, try to do them regularly to maintain your strength. If you haven’t been given any but would like to stay active, ask a member of staff — we’re here to help.
Staying mobile, even in small ways, is a vital part of your recovery.
