If your child has been referred for breathing, exercise or sleep investigations, the healthcare science team will work with you and your child to provide the tests and support you need.
Our specialist team of healthcare scientists supports children and families by providing a wide range of breathing, exercise, and sleep investigations. We also assist patients who require Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or Long-Term Ventilation (LTV) therapy.
We work closely with teams across the Children’s Hospital, such as asthma, respiratory, cystic fibrosis (CF), sleep, and LTV care, and accept breathing test referrals from Leicester GP services at our Hinckley Community Diagnostic Centre.

Breathing tests
Our breathing tests help us understand how your lungs and breathing are working. Below, you can find information about each test, what it involves, and what to expect during your appointment.
Sleep studies
Children may be referred to Children’s Respiratory Physiology for a range of different sleep studies.
A sleep study is a test to record what happens when the body when you are asleep. There are many different reasons why your child may have been referred for a sleep study. It may be because they are tired during the day, snore or have trouble sleeping. Children who have a CPAP/ventilator machine or oxygen at home will have regular sleep studies to make sure the machine is properly treating your child’s condition.
None of the sleep studies will hurt. Your appointment letter should tell you details of where to come for your appointment.
If you have an appointment booked, find more information about different appointment types:
Flight assessments
Not all children need a flight assessment. Please speak with your consultant or clinical team if you’re unsure. We simulate airplane oxygen levels in a safe environment to check if your child needs oxygen support during flights.
