The Leicester Intestinal Failure Team (LIFT) provides specialist care for people with complex nutritional needs and intestinal failure, on ward 42 and 43 at Leicester Royal Infirmary. We support patients across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland, and Northamptonshire, and work closely with Nottingham University Hospitals to deliver services across the East Midlands.
Intestinal failure happens when the small intestine can’t absorb enough nutrients or fluids. This may be due to surgery or a long-term condition. Many patients need Parenteral Nutrition (PN) — where nutrients are given directly into the bloodstream. Patients are reviewed on a daily basis by our Intestinal Failure Team.
Our services include
- Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) setup and monitoring
- Nutrition Nurse Specialists for tube feeding support and advice
- Daily reviews by our expert team during hospital stays
Specialist clinics for:
- Short bowel syndrome
- High-output stomas
- Entero-cutaneous fistulas
Patients going home on Parenteral Nutrition (HPN) will be followed up in one of our Multi-Disciplinary Intestinal Failure clinics. In the Intestinal Failure clinic we also provide specialist assessment and management of patients with complex nutritional problems such as entero-cutaneous fistulae or high output stoma secondary to short bowel syndrome.
Our Nutrition Nurse Specialists provide enteral tube feeding assessments and troubleshooting advice and have a large amount of experience in the management of enteral feeding tubes and are happy to discuss any tube feeding problems.
