We provide care to women and birthing people in our hospitals, birth centres and in the community. Each year, around 10,000 babies are born in Leicester. We provide a wide range of specialist services here in Leicester. Our care is available at two main sites, and we also support home births if that’s the right choice for you and your family.
- We have well-equipped midwife-led units at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital, and at St Mary’s Hospital in Melton Mowbray.
- We have consultant-led delivery suites at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.
- Our Home Birth Team is made up of experienced midwives who are passionate about supporting safe and positive home births.
St Mary’s Birth Centre
Please note from 7 July 2025, births and inpatient postnatal services at St Mary’s Birth Centre will be paused due to safe staffing challenges and low birth numbers.
Home births and community-based antenatal and postnatal care in the area will continue uninterrupted. Midwifery-led units are available at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Leicester General Hospital. If you have any concerns regarding your pregnancy, please speak with your named midwife.
Visiting times on maternity wards
- Second birth partner and siblings of the baby between 9am to 8pm.
- Siblings of the baby must be with an adult visitor at all times.
- Two extra visitors can come between 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. There is a maximum of three people at a bed space at any one time. Siblings do not count in this number, but the adult looking after them does.
If you are having or had a planned caesarean section and are on the enhanced recovery programme, during your minimum four hours enhanced recovery period it is only one birth partner who will be able to be with you during this time.
For full details, please see our Visiting patients in our hospitals leaflet.
