Oncology is the study and treament of tumours. We provide treatments to thousands of patients across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and beyond. Each year we care for nearly 3,000 inpatients, over 30,000 outpatients and almost 13,000 day case and chemotherapy patients.
The oncology service is made up of the following areas:
Oncology wards
There are two wards for inpatients; Ward 39 and Ward 40. The wards are on the first floor of the Osborne building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. There is a separate Oncology and Haematology Assessment Unit located on Level 1 of the Balmoral Building, Leicester Royal Infirmary.
You can find accessibility information for the Osborne Assessment Unit on the AccesAble website.
Oncology outpatients
Many of the oncology outpatient clinics are held in the outpatient department on the ground floor of the Osborne building. Clinics do however run at other venues and you may be asked to attend a clinic at another hospital or in the radiotherapy department. Some appointments are done as virtual clinics, so may have a telephone consultation instead of attending the hospital.
Chemotherapy suite
Chemotherapy treatment for your cancer will usually be given in the Chemotherapy Suite, which is on the first floor of the Osborne Building.
GEMS Charity aims to help make patients and their supporters who visit the Oncology Unit in the Osborne Building at the Leicester Royal Infirmary more comfortable.
