We are transforming care to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve across Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland – and beyond.
Our plans include upgrading existing buildings, opening new, state-of-the-art facilities, delivering care closer to home, and using digital innovations – including artificial intelligence – to improve care for thousands of people, now and in the future.
A new Urgent Treatment Centre at the LRI

This modern, purpose-built facility will replace the current MIaMI (Minor Injuries and Minor Illnesses) service. The new UTC will play a vital role in providing the right care in the right location for patients who attend our Emergency Department, the busiest in the country.
Located next to the Medical Same Day Emergency Care (M-SDEC) unit, it will provide a better environment for patients and staff, including larger clinical rooms, diagnostic testing and appropriate facilities for both adults and children. A second storey will also be constructed for the future expansion of theatres.

World-class facility to reduce waiting times
The East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC), which opened in December 2024 at the Leicester General Hospital, is a world-class facility helping to reduce waits for appointments and treatment. It allows us to continue delivering planned procedures even during the busiest times in our emergency and urgent care services.

The Hinckley Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), which opened in June 2025, is a state-of-the-art facility offering patients a wide range of diagnostic tests in the community.
Located next to the site of the former Hinckley and District Community Hospital on Mount Road, the CDC provides tests including CT, MRI, x-ray, ultrasound, phlebotomy, dermatology, audiology assessments and endoscopy.
The centre is expected to provide over 80,000 appointments every year. Patients can be referred to access diagnostic services at the CDC by a GP or hospital specialist.

Our new Endoscopy Unit, which opened in December 2025, is part of our development of the Leicester General Hospital into a local and regional hub for planned care.
This dedicated facility will see more than 10,000 patients each year once it opens in 2025, carrying out outpatient endoscopy procedures. Find out more about endoscopy on the NHS website.
The new facility provides extra procedure rooms and replaced two existing endoscopy procedure rooms at the Leicester General Hospital.
Hospitals for the future
Thanks to funding from the national New Hospital Programme, enabling works have begun on our ambitious plans for a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The enabling works will take place across all three of our acute hospital sites – the Leicester Royal Infirmary, the Glenfield Hospital and the Leicester General Hospital. Works include:
- Leicester Royal Infirmary: Relocation of services from Knighton Street, creating modern facilities for training staff, state-of-the-art laboratories for Immunology and Cytogenetics, expansion of inpatient Pharmacy services and administrative functions. Plans include a six-storey extension to the Windsor Building and refurbishment of space in the Victoria and Jarvis Buildings.
- Leicester General Hospital: Refurbishment of space in the East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC) to provide a purpose-built new home for the Hearing and Balance service.
- Glenfield Hospital: Refurbishment of several buildings to accommodate teams currently based at the LRI.
Originally due to be completed between 2030 and 2032, the main construction on the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital is expected to begin between 2030 and 2035, following a national announcement of changes to funding timelines.
Digital transformation
We have taken huge strides on our digital journey in the last two years, implementing a first-of-type Patient Administration System which streamlines care and means patients will no longer have to repeat their medical history when meeting a new clinician. We went paperless in our Emergency Department in 2024 and introduced Badgernet in neonatal services earlier this year – allowing for real-time monitoring of patient information. AI voice trial technology in our clinical areas is capturing patient notes and actions, reducing the amount of time clinical teams spend on administration.
With more to come to ‘re-wire’ our hospitals, we are fully embracing digitally enabled care, smart buildings, remote-monitoring devices, and other new technologies to improve patient care and the experience of our colleagues.
