The Leicester General Hospital (LGH) has been awarded the prestigious Pathway to Excellence® accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Centre (ANCC).
This follows the accreditation of the Glenfield Hospital (GH) last year, making the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust the only NHS Trust in the UK to have two accredited inpatient sites.
Together, the LGH and GH are now recognised as outstanding workplaces for nurses, registered nursing associates and midwives, with strong wellbeing, leadership, and professional development underpinning excellent patient care.
Group Chief Nurse, Julie Hogg, said: “This achievement reflects the outstanding work of our nurses, registered nursing associates, and midwives in creating and sustaining supportive, empowering, and professional workplaces. It confirms what we have always known – that our dedicated colleagues are living the six Pathway to Excellence® standards in everything they do.”
The Pathway to Excellence® programme is an internationally recognised standard awarded to organisations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice, wellbeing, leadership, and professional development – all of which support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
Achieving this accreditation required a rigorous process, including extensive evidence submission and high levels of colleague engagement. The LGH exceeded these demanding standards, with exceptional feedback highlighting colleague satisfaction, opportunities for growth, and robust recognition and retention.
The ANCC commended UHL for high levels of colleague satisfaction, professional opportunities, and robust recognition and retention at LGH, all of which are vital for safe, high-quality patient care.
These successes at the LGH and GH are only the beginning, as work is already under way to progress the excellence journey even further across UHL.
