The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust’s (UHL) digital team have won an award after successfully launching a new Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system, which is already benefiting both patients and staff.
The Patient Administration System (PAS) project team at UHL won a prestigious HTN Now Awards 2025/26 in the Healthcare Improvement and Operations Transformation category. The recognition marks a major digital milestone for the Trust and celebrates its largest electronic patient record (EPR) project to date.
Delivered in partnership with Nervecentre between 2022 and 2025, the project replaced UHL’s legacy Patient Administration System with a modern, fully integrated, electronic patient record platform.
More than 280 workflows were mapped, redesigned, validated, and implemented, creating a new system built around the needs of clinical and operational teams. The new platform lays the foundations for more seamless record sharing through shared care records and the NHS App, and for future AI and automation capabilities.
Within days of go‑live, the new PAS was supporting the management of 18,000 appointments. Documentation improved, referral triage became fully integrated, electronic procedure listing streamlined theatre planning, and enhanced worklist visibility strengthened patient safety. One of the standout achievements was the flawless migration of more than 50 million records.
Reflecting on the award win, Andy Carruthers, Group Chief Technology Innovation Officer, said: “Winning this award is a fantastic recognition of the sheer dedication and expertise of everyone involved from across the project team, some of whom worked on this for a number of years.
“Delivering a transformation at this scale can be disruptive. We now have a digital solution that can be improved and evolved to better meet our needs, and a huge number of changes have already been introduced in response to colleague feedback. That our move to the new system went so smoothly is something the whole organisation can be proud of. It shows what is possible when our digital, clinical, and operational teams come together with a shared ambition to improve care for our patients.
“The award win is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the PAS project team in partnership with Nervecentre and positions UHL as a leader in digital transformation across the NHS, with others across the East Midlands and nationally. It also celebrates a project that is already delivering meaningful improvements for patients and colleagues.”
UHL-UHN has also been nominated in four HSJ Digital Awards, and the shortlisted projects are:
