Professor Angie Doshani, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at UHL, has been honoured with a High Sheriff’s Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the communities of Leicester, Leicestershire, and beyond.
The award was presented by the High Sheriff of Leicestershire, Stephen Bryan JP, at a Women in Leadership Conference held to mark International Women’s Day. In presenting the award, the High Sheriff recognised Professor Doshani’s exceptional contribution to healthcare, innovation, and community engagement over more than three decades of dedicated public service.
Professor Doshani has combined clinical excellence with a deep commitment to tackling health inequalities and improving outcomes for underserved communities. Her work continues to make a meaningful difference to the lives of women and families across the region.
A key achievement has been her development of JanamApp, a pioneering, culturally tailored digital health platform designed to improve access to maternity and health information for South Asian women. Developed and piloted within UHL, the app has successfully addressed language, cultural, and digital barriers, supporting South Asian women accessing maternity services in Leicester. Now expanding nationally, JanamApp demonstrates how locally driven innovation can deliver lasting, system-wide impact.
In his remarks, the High Sheriff also highlighted Professor Doshani’s role as a respected national advocate for maternal health equity. She has contributed expert evidence to major national reports, including MBRRACE, and has shared insights with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Birth Trauma, helping to ensure that the experiences of ethnically diverse communities inform policy and practice.
Professor Doshani is also a passionate educator and mentor. Through her work with medical students, trainees, and junior doctors, she has championed inclusive teaching, simulation-based training, and quality improvement—supporting the development of a compassionate and culturally aware future workforce.
Her impact extends beyond the hospital setting, leading and supporting a wide range of community initiatives addressing perinatal and mental health, domestic abuse, bereavement, and other sensitive health issues. By working in partnership with charities, community organisations, and trusted media platforms, she has helped build stronger connections between healthcare services and the communities they serve.
This recognition reflects Professor Doshani’s integrity, leadership, and lasting contribution to improving lives across Leicester, Leicestershire, and beyond, and UHL is proud to celebrate this well-deserved honour.
