Towards a smokefree environment
Our buildings are all smoke free and we provide smoking cessation advice and resources for patients who smoke including nicotine replacement therapy.
Vapes/e-cigarettes are now the most popular stop smoking aid and have a lot of potential to help reduce tobacco use. Vapes are not allowed to be used in hospital buildings or to be charged in the buildings. We do allow patients and visitors to vape outside away from building entrances and open windows.
Inpatients
“I am a smoker, and I’m concerned about being able to smoke during my hospital stay”. To protect the health of everyone working or visiting the hospital, smoking is not allowed in any of the hospital buildings.
The NHS has a new standard of care to identify and treat all smokers when they are admitted to hospital. Stopping smoking is the best thing anyone can do to improve their health. The benefits of being smokefree while in hospital are:
- Shorter hospital stays
- Fewer complications
- Better wound healing
- Reduced re-admissions
What to expect when you are admitted
You will be asked if you smoke, and if so, you will be offered nicotine replacement
medications to help relieve any nicotine withdrawal symptoms. As a routine part of your
care, you will be visited by a CURE Tobacco Dependency Advisor who can support you to
remain smokefree during your admission. They can ensure your care continues after
discharge by making a referral to the community stop smoking services for FREE 12 weeks of support by a trained stop smoking advisor.
Outpatients
When attending any outpatient appointments, you will be encouraged to stop smoking due to the benefits to your health from quitting. We know this can be very difficult, but you are not alone and FREE stop smoking support is available to help you. You are three times more likely to quit smoking when using stop smoking medications and support from a trained stop smoking advisor.
