A warm welcome to our neonatal unit (NNU) from all the staff here at UHL. We understand that the NNU is not where you wanted, or perhaps, expected to be. You might be feeling a mixture of emotions.

Our unit adopts a FICare (Family Integrated Care) approach. This means we want to support and empower families to be the primary caregivers for their babies, in partnership with the clinical team.
What is Neonatal care?
Neonatal care is the type of care a baby born premature or sick receives in a neonatal unit. Units are a part of hospitals which provide care for babies soon after they are born. The word ‘neonatal’ means newborn, or the first 28 days of life.
Over 90,000 babies are born premature or sick and in need of neonatal care in the UK each year.
We know that having a baby in neonatal care is likely to bring up a whole range of emotions, and some of these can be hard to face. It may be that you feel anxious about why your baby has been born prematurely or sick, or about the treatment they are receiving.
Please feel free to talk to any member of our team if you have any questions. Our team members are here to help guide, and support you and your family, so that the journey through our neonatal service can be as smooth as possible for you and your baby.
