Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a blood test that looks at small fragments of your baby’s DNA in your bloodstream. It is used to assess the chance of Trisomy 21, 18, and 13.
- It is more accurate than standard screening tests but does not give a definite diagnosis.
- It is available from 10 weeks of pregnancy.
- It is offered as part of NHS care if you have a higher chance screening result (greater than 1 in 150).
- Some parents will choose to pay for the test.
A specialist midwife will take your blood sample, explain the test, and provide your results. In a small number of cases, NIPT may not be suitable. This will be discussed with you at your appointment.
